Residents and their families joined together with staff members and seniors from the Jewish community as The Legacy Senior Communities held celebrations to observe Hanukkah. Special Hanukkah parties were hosted at both The Legacy Preston Hollow in Dallas and The Legacy Willow Bend life care community in Plano. The communities observed the Festival of Lights with music, food, decorations and a menorah lighting.
The holiday commemorates a miracle that occurred after the Jewish people defeated oppressors and reclaimed the Holy Temple. When they tried to light the menorah in the temple, they only had enough oil to last one day, but miraculously it burned for eight days. The menorah is lit for eight nights during Hanukkah as a symbol of this miracle.
During the celebration at The Legacy Willow Bend, all attendees lit the menorah and indulged in homemade latkes, which are potato pancakes fried in oil. Eli Davidsohn performed Hanukkah melodies and the men’s A capella singing group from congregation Anshai Torah, Kol Rina, impressed the crowd.
“I loved seeing all of the smiling faces, and I especially had fun frying the latkes,” said Executive Director Marilyn Israel. “It is an honor to celebrate Hanukkah with the residents and their families, and I look forward to this holiday every year.”
The Legacy Preston Hollow hosted a Hanukkah Party co-sponsored by VITAS Healthcare, and 40 seniors from the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center of Dallas (JCC) joined in the festivities. Guests and residents were treated to traditional latkes and jelly donuts fried in oils that symbolize the oil that miraculously provided light for eight days. In addition, they were entertained by students from Mesorah High School, who performed Hanukkah melodies on the piano and took part in a Hanukkah play.
“Hanukkah is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, while giving thanks for the religious freedom we have today,” said Andrea Statman, director of development at The Legacy Senior Communities. “We were thrilled to have seniors from the JCC participate in our Hanukkah party. They brought a lot of joy to the residents, and they were able to rekindle friendships during the celebration.”
