The Heard Museum has lots of cool things to see and do in its upcoming line-up. A few of these things include zip lining through their Wildlife Sanctuary, birding and encountering a 46-foot T-Rex.

On January 9, get ready to take a ride on the wild side as you soar through the treetops of the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll travel down a ropes course zip line for just $12 a ticket. Ride as many times as your heart desires, but remember it costs each time, too. As long as you’re at least 10 years old, you’re golden. See the ropes course program for more information on size requirements.

Cool, random fact: Much of the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary is a restored area of the Blackland Prairie. Less than 1 percent remains, making this tall-grass prairie the most endangered ecosystem in North America! The rich soil that supports the habitat is made up of materials that date back to inland sea that covered this part of Texas during the Cretaceous period.

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, then perhaps a bird walk will. The Heard Museum and Prairie & Timbers Audubon Society (PTAS) offer monthly guided bird walks on the Heard Sanctuary. You can look forward to this every second Saturday of the month, so January 9 is up next. Walks begin promptly at 8 a.m. and last 1.5 hours. Walks are included in regular admission, so that’s a bonus. Bird spotting and identification techniques are taught to all, but the bird walks are mainly intended for beginning and intermediate birders. Also, be ready to ask questions on your walk through prairie, woodland and wetland habitats.

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Heard is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit and was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard. Miss Heard was 80 years old when she saw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. Today, the Heard’s mission of bringing nature and people together is carried out through education, particularly of young people, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation.
