For only a few week’s time, Spartacus, originally created at the Bolshoi in 1968, will be available on the big screen in local theaters, including Angelika Film Center in Plano, Cinemark 24 at Legacy and Cinemark Allen 16. Angelika in Plano offers two showtimes: one on Sunday, March 13 and the other on Tuesday, March 22.
Bolshoi Ballet is an internationally renowned ballet company founded in 1776 and based in Moscow, Russia. One of their most famed directors was Yuri Grigorovich who had an extensive career at Bolshoi from 1964 to 1995. Grigorovich created Spartacus four years into his directorship there, and it has since remained the Russian company’s signature ballet.
Spartacus is a three-hour-long show that takes place in ancient Rome depicting the capture of the Thracian king and his wife Phrygia. The king is forced to fight as a gladiator, killing his friend Crassus in an epic battle. Principal dancer Mikhail Lobukhin is stunning in the role of the legendary gladiator, along with Svetlana Zakharova as Aegina, Vladislav Lantratov as Crassus and Anna Nikulina as Phrygia.
This worldly popular ballet written by Aram Kachaturian is not one to miss.
