Huawei Technologies USA partnered with Plano ISD for Huawei’s Day of Service, “Paint Party 2.0 – Fresh Coat of Paint,” on Monday, June 6. Ten Huawei employees volunteered to lend a helping hand to the district’s Holifield Science Learning Center, located at 3401 E. Spring Creek Pkwy.

The Holifield Science Learning Center, more commonly known as the Outdoor Learning Center, is an interpretive, hands-on educational facility consisting of an indoor auditorium, a science classroom, nature trails and the Jim Dunlap Living Materials Center, which houses 150–200 live animals.

As part of their Day of Service, Huawei volunteers generously gave their time to clean and repaint the exterior walls and trim of the center’s storage building, remove window shutters and hardware, repaint the trim of two outdoor teaching buildings and stain two picnic tables. Brett Taylor, the lead teacher of the Outdoor Learning Center, guided the group and provided a tour of the center afterwards.

Upcoming projects for the Outdoor Learning Center include installing new shutters, clearing trees from the prairie and painting the Center’s logo on the storage shed. The nature trail system is located on a 15-acre wooded area on Rowlett Creek adjacent to Bob Woodruff Park, which is located near one of the district’s three senior high schools, Plano East Senior High. The land is provided by the City of Plano through a cooperative agreement with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. This program is an integral part of Plano ISD students’ educational experiences in science education, environmental education and integrated curriculum. Annually, Holifield Science Learning Center serves about 17,000 students.

The Plano Independent School District (pisd.edu) endeavors to foster the highest level of student learning. The mission of Plano ISD is to provide an excellent education for each student.
