The Hendrick Scholarship Foundation (HSF) is celebrating 25 years of helping Plano ISD students achieve their dreams of a college education. HSF students have come from extreme poverty and have overcome significant adversities. HSF provides over $100,000 annually for student scholarships.

There are currently 49 students in the program, 34 attending Collin College, and 15 students in various four-year-colleges and universities. HSF provides a maximum total of $16,500 and students can participate in the program for up to eight years. To date, HSF has provided over $1 million in multi-layer scholarships to over 275 students. Approximately 75 percent of the students earn a college degree compared to 48.5 percent of the general student population in Texas.

The Hendrick Academy of Honor was formed in 1991. In 2008, the name was changed to the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation. Early board members were community leaders who wanted to express their appreciation of Plano ISD Superintendent, Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick upon his retirement in 1991.

Typically, HSF receives 40–50 applications annually. All students must attend Collin College their first two years, maintain a GPA of 2.5 and take a minimum of nine credit hours per semester.

In addition to financial assistance, each student is assigned a volunteer coach who is a source of motivation. HSF also offers tutoring in collaboration with The Outreach Movement and several retired PISD educators. Life Skills Workshops are offered providing information on topics such as financial planning, career guidance, rental leases and buying a car.

In 2015, HSF received a grant from LegacyTexas Bank for $5,000 to fund the workshops. Other program partners include Plano Profile, Capital One, Plano ISD, The Outreach Movement and Collin College.

One of the main fundraising events of the year for the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation is Taste of Elegance. Plano Profile attended the event this April, read all about the classy event filled with food tastings. Also, check out 5 minutes with 5 chefs on our virtual magazine, page 40–41.
