Carl G. Young Sr. Park Splashpad Expansion Underway In Denton, Texas

The project is projected to open in May

The Carl G. Young Sr. Park in Denton is a cherished community space offering an array of amenities for locals and visitors alike. Among its features stands a splash pad, the result of a community-driven initiative dating back to 2014.

Recent developments have seen this splashpad undergo a remarkable transformation — expanding from its original 1,200 square feet to 2,500 square feet, the project will feature five vertical elements and eleven engaging in-ground sprayers and promises endless fun and excitement.

In a video posted on the city of Denton's facebook page, Park Planning Manager Chris Escoto said the project has been a collaborative effort, funded in part by Park development fees and the American Rescue Plan Act.

"This is the phase two project for the current splash pad," said Escoto during a recent site visit. "Previously, the splash pad featured one amenity with some ground sprayers. This project, we're looking to expand that."

The expansion, projected for completion in May 2024, promises an enhanced recreational experience for all park-goers just in time for the summer heat. "We had over 200 responses from people for us to make it a bigger footprint itself, overall creating a better amenity for all to enjoy," added Escoto.

The journey towards this ambitious revitalization traces back to 2014 when voters approved the sale of General Obligation Bonds to finance the initial construction of the splash pad. Over the years, the community rallied together, demonstrating unwavering support through grassroots efforts and crowdfunding endeavors.

Since December 2022, Denton's park planning staff has actively engaged with the community, gathering valuable feedback to shape the splashpad's expansion. Through a comprehensive public survey conducted from April to June 2023, residents voiced their preferences, paving the way to incorporate the exciting new components.
